The Institute for Leadership in Ministry is a three-year program which provides formation in Catholic theology, pastoral ministry and spirituality; and education and training in leadership.
Our goal is to prepare competent ministerial leaders to serve throughout the Diocese of San Jose.

Here are some qualities of the ideal candidate:

  1. a call to the ministry of leadership within the Catholic community
  2. demonstrated or potential leadership ability
  3. current participation in pastoral ministry
  4. prior formation in the faith
  5. willingness to commit to 10-12 hours per month for classes
  6. ability to complete the reading and writing assignments
  7. ability to devote additional hours outside of class for assignments.

Admissions criteria: The mission of the Institute is the formation of competent leaders. The ideal candidate being considered for the Institute should have:

  1. call to the ministry of leadership within the Catholic community
  2. demonstrated or potential leadership ability
  3. participation in some form of pastoral ministry
  4. willingness to commit to 10–12 hours per month for classes and seminars
  5. the ability to devote additional hours outside of class for reading and writing papers.


All prospective students must be recommended by their pastor. When invited to do so, candidate will complete the application form.


  1. Complete the Application Form including the letter of intent.
  2. Submit the Application Form to your pastor for review.
  3. Await being contacted by the Director and advised of their acceptance upon pastor approval and receipt of all forms. 


  1.  Review candidate’s application forms.
  2. Select candidates to recommend. (Admissions criteria)
  3. Complete the ILM Recommendation Form for each candidate being recommended.
  4. Send the Recommendation Form with the candidate’s Application Form to the Director of the Institute 

Note:  Due to limited space, when a class is full, the candidate will be placed on a waiting list and is guaranteed admission the following year.
